Password strength meter

Tagged as: account registration, form, inline validation, password strength meter, security

The Design Need:

Users need to enter a password for their online account and need assistance in creating a strong password.

Design Examples:

Password strength meter used in wordpressDrupal password strength meter

Design Solution:

Offer a visual indication of the strength of the password that is entered by the user. Make sure that this feedback is provided in real time, so the user gets immediate feedback. Help the user to strengthen their password by giving tips.

  • Visual indication of the strength of the typed password, based on an automatic check in the background.
  • Provide clear tips on how to create a strong password.

When to use:

When the user needs to create a password to log in to the website or web application later on.

Why use this solution (rationale):

Password security relies on the strength of the password and the ability of the user to remember it. Users tend to remember better passwords they have chosen themselves. To avoid post-its with passwords on the computer screen it is advisable to have users choose their own passwords. However, many users do not know what makes a good (strong) password. By providing them with tips on how to create a strong password and indicating the strength of their password automatically while they are typing, you can help them create a strong password they are likely to remember.
