Default value

The Design Need:
The user needs to enter data into a form or system, and it is likely that they will enter data that will match well-chosen default values.

Design Solution:
Prefill text input boxes, combo boxes and other form controls with well-defined default values. You can determine good defaults by using data entered by previous visitors, account info, previous selections, previous communication, etc.. Do not choose a default value because you do not want blank fields in your graphical user interfaces. Choosing a wrong default value will increase errors and create extra work for all users. When users arrive at a form via an e-mail, carry over as much info as possible, such as e-mail address and name. This will speed up the registration process considerably.

When to use:
When users have to choose between many options and it is likely that a predictable choice will be made, a default value should be presented: e.g. in flight bookings it is likely that at least 1 adult will be flying. Attention: When not to use default values in your form design? When users have to think about an answer and default values might cause them to make an unintentional selection, e.g. receive extra publicity for company products.

Why use this solution (rationale):
More reasons to improve your web form design:
Good defaults make filling out forms easier and faster and will reduce errors. Good defaults serve two purposes:
- Examples of the kind of information you are asking for
- The most frequently selected option can help users to make decisions, and shorten the process for those who already know they want this option, e.g. prefilling the “departure airport” with Amsterdam airport in a Dutch flight form.
